Cockeysville, MD - Address' challenging specifications

Precast Manhole

These manholes were produced for the site of an old oil refinery.  The job had unique specifications. All the joint and pipe connections were made with a special oil resistant material (“Nitrile A-Loks”).  Special epoxy coating was used inside and out.  Atlantic worked closely with the customer and A-Lok Products, Inc. to minimize cost of the special materials.

Sarasota, FL - Helps out local community project

In September, we were contacted by Joyce Poelsma of The Historeum in Palmetto, Florida. Joyce explained how they were trying to save a local 96-year-old home from being destroyed and that they needed Atlantic’s help with the control structure. Joyce was not asking for a donation but it was perfect timing for Atlantic to give a little back to our community.

With a little research we found that The Historeum had recently located a buyer for this historic home that was otherwise going to be demolished to make way for new construction. The home was originally built in 1910 by Asa Lamb. According to The Herald Tribune “the pale blue home is a landmark for motorists heading into Palmetto on the Green Bridge”. This is something most of us Floridian’s can attest to.

On Tuesday, September 26, the home was transported by barge to its new location on the Little Manatee River as a retreat center for pastors. Atlantic’s donation, the control structure that will go on the home’s new site, includes not only the material but also the hard work from our employees. We felt that this was a good way to show we are serious about our organization’s culture. After all, part of our culture is our Community. We are glad we could help this local landmark live on for years to come.

Thrust BlocksExcess waste can become a profit with Thrust Blocks, a new product for the Georgia plant. In Georgia, the contractors pour concrete on Tees and Elbows for Force Main & Pressure Points on pipes. Sometimes the concrete trucks can not reach the area’s that need concrete poured. One of the suggestions we received from several of our contractors is that precast Thrust Blocks could be used instead of a concrete field pour. From Atlantic’s point of view the Trust Blocks can be poured with excess concrete that would have normally been thrown out at the end of the day.

Volume 7, Issue 5

Atlantic Concrete in Tullytown has recently acquired a large format copier, scanner, printer from Oce. This device will allow Atlantic Industries to improve our service to customers and specifiers by allowing us to receive contract documents in electronic format. The Oce large format device will also increase efficiency and productivity allowing for greater flexibility to meet changing volume and needs.

In January 2006, we erected a new production building for our custom forms, drop collars, cleanout blocks, and endwalls. Previously these structures were made outside when the rain and snow interfered with production. This building has increased our production capability allowing us to produce continuous through the year.

In 2005, we had an endwall form made by Atlantic Steel. When the form was delivered we contacted Form Crete to design hole formers so the inside diameter of the pipe would only be seen at the front of the wall. This made for a better looking product by not seeing the pipe mortared in. Now we can produce 12” to 30” Md. SHA approved endwalls. We will now start working on doing other types of endwalls for some of the other counties.

Atlantic – Sarasota makes donation to local habitat

Future Home of approximately 15 bears at BCH.Atlantic’s motto from the beginning has always been about Attitude. Attitude can be defined as the way we look at any given situation. In Florida, we found a creative way to give errors a positive outcome. By recycling scrap everyone wins (even the animals).

In February we donated structures to the Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary (BCH) for use as animal dens. BCH will be using the structures to create living spaces for their bears and tigers.

Shown to the right is the future home of approximately 15 bears at BCH including European, Himalayan, and North American Grizzlies. The home is expected to be complete in 2007. Clayton Rosaire of BCH came to us in December 2005 to inquire about our concrete as habitats. He thought concrete was the solution to his problem, but being a non profit organization wondered if we might be able to work something out to benefit everyone. BCH came in the last week of February and loaded their truck with perfect homes for the animals. Clayton’s ‘solution’ not only helps the tigers and bears, but also gives Atlantic more room in our yard.

We were awarded the contract, from RBR Construction, to build 19, Precast storm units for the airport.

The units were 3’x6’, 6’x6’, & 3’x13’. The base units weighed up to 22 tons.

Our client, knowing that a high water table, in addition to close proximity to a water channel, & a very heavy rainy season could cause delays, decided that the ONLY way to enhance their installation process was by using A-LOK seals.

We obliged by supplying A-LOK STM Storm Gaskets for RCP pipes ranging from 30” - 48” B-wall.

In addition, the project called for epoxy-coated rebar which would’ve caused a major delay in production.

We worked with both RBR & Darex PR to offer an alternative & received an approval for DCI Corrosion Inhibitor (ASTM C-494 Type C).

This allowed us to start production immediately & to meet the clients scheduling requirements.

After speaking with Eng. Nieves, he expressed complete satisfaction with our products. The crew was able to install a unit in half a day, 7 units in 2 weeks, & the project will be completed in much less time than expected. He was especially satisfied with the ease of installing RCP into our A-LOK seal.

He estimated it saved him 30% of time, which can only be translated into profit for his company.

Stormwater + (Prime Real Estate + Maintenance) = Underground Detention

This equation may determine a trend realized by the Georgia Facility. The Wet Detention Basin and typical Outlet Control Structure are still most often used for residential storm water management, but on the commercial site we are seeing a lot more underground design for detention areas.

The initial cost of underground detention may be higher, but through progressive elaboration when considering the scope of the project (reviewing maintenance requirements like sediment/trash accumulation, erosion, vegetation/insect control and property safety controls), civil engineers are creating designs in underground detention for storm water management that surely meet the goals of all of the project’s stakeholders.

The Georgia Plant is currently producing two 4 ft. x 15 ft. Drop Inlet boxes. Each for twin 104 ft. runs of 48” RCP, accompanied by a 5 ft. X 7 ft. underground control structure, which after passing through it, the water passes through an 18 in. outlet headwall. This design will allow a paved parking lot to be constructed over the large pipes and result in conservative land usage in the rapidly growing East Fulton County.

We have begun delivery to the site and greatly look forward to visualizing the finished result of this innovatively engineered storm water design for the “Gwinnett Clinic” project.
